After hosting the Asian Athletics Championships (AAC) and Champions Trophy Hockey (CTH) successfully, the possibilities are there that Odisha may soon host the Rugby tournaments of International-level.

To inspect the infrastructure of the state, a delegation of the World Rugby Federation (WRF), Rugby India Association (RIA) and Asia Rugby visited Kalinga Stadium located in the capital city of the state Bhubaneswar. If everything goes fine, then this stadium will host the international Rugby tournaments here.

After the thorough inspection of the stadium, the delegates of WRF expressed satisfaction and they said the infrastructure of venue according to the requirement of the game and they also said that the rugby tournament of the cooperation of the Asia, State Government and World Rugby, will be hosted in the same studio here in the future.

Post inspection, the team had discussions with Chief Minister of the state Naveen Patnaik with regards to organizing an event within the state.

One of the members of the World Rugby Federation, Benjamin Van Rooyen said, “We came to Bhubaneswar to check the possibility of organizing International tournaments of Rugby in the future. Bhubaneshwar has the kind of infrastructure that is required for the event.”

Rija Shah, the member of Asia Rugby, said, “The likelihood of organizing events in Bhubaneswar is one thing that needs to be discussed with India Rugby. Last time when India hosted the Rugby event, it was in Mumbai, New Delhi and in Chennai. So, as of now, we are seeking the opportunity here.”

However, praising the Odisha government’s efforts in hosting the international rugby sports events, the Asia Rugby, Vice-President, Aga Hussain said, the event is on the cards in the next year and things will be all good, if the all kinds of support are assured by the Chief Minister.
